What is Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis *is NOT*…
There are so many myths and misconceptions about hypnosis, that I am going to introduce it by all the things that it is *not*. Those who are not familiar with it, view it with suspicion if not outright fright. If asked what they think it is, they generally say “sleep”, “unconsciousness”, “mind control”, “magic” or even “voodoo”.
All of the above are incorrect, as illustrated below:
Sleep - Although a person may appear to be asleep while in hypnosis, they are not. In most cases the subject is fully aware of communication with the hypnotist and can respond either verbally or by signal.
Unconsciousness - Unconsciousness in not involved in hypnosis. A subject asked to make a specific movement will comply with the request unless they find it objectionable.
Mind Control - There is no surrender of one’s mental power and control. A person who does not want to be hypnotized cannot be hypnotized or be induced to do or say anything against their will.
Magic or Voodoo - There is absolutely no magic or voodoo involved in hypnosis. The actions and behaviors of the subject being hypnotized can be explained. Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness.
Hypnosis *IS*…
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, usually of deep trance-like relaxation, where perceptions are heightened and focused. At different times in our day (and night), we all shift our levels of consciousness, from beta, to alpha, and theta. We can be induced into hypnosis through guided suggestions by a practitioner or we can induce ourselves into a state of hypnosis, with sufficient knowledge of the technique.
This particular state of consciousness can be used to affect change and healing from the inside out. It is simply a technique that allows us to bridge the conscious state to the subconscious state of our mind.
How Hypnosis Works
All human beings have two distinct minds - the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind deals with everyday living, logic and reason. The subconscious mind, since the moment we came into this life, received and retained (neither accepting nor rejecting) all of the messages and information we received from our surrounding and background: genetic, familial, social, religious, experiential, plus all the conflicts that entered our daily lives. However, the subconscious mind does not analyze, as does the conscious mind, but accepts in the literal sense all the messages it had stored. The subconscious is also the seat of all memory. Traumatic events can often be buried or suppressed in the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is vastly larger than the conscious mind and it is said to be more powerful than the conscious mind simply because it holds a great deal of "hidden" information and "programs" that often dictate our behavior...hence giving us sometimes the impression of powerlessness.
When, for whatever reason, the conscious mind becomes overloaded, the subconscious prepares us for what is considered appropriate action (usually fight or flight). Many personal problems, habits, stresses, anxieties, attitudes or apparent deficiencies can be traced to interpretations held in the subconscious mind. Often these interpretations are erroneous or illogical because we have absorbed them at face value in early childhood when we were unable to make sense of them and question them. However, these erroneous interpretations can be brought into the light of the conscious mind where they can then be understood, resolved and released.
Uses Of Hypnosis
A major benefit of hypno-therapy is its ability to uncover and bring into awareness information or experiences which may be the cause of a troublesome disorder.
Hypnosis can be used to tap into the subconscious for various concerns such as:
